The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race

On Saturday the 3rd April 2010 250,000 people will line the river bank between Putney and Mortlake to watch the Oxford & Cambridge Boat Race.

The Boat Race has been going since 1829 with Cambridge having won 79 race’s to Oxford’s 74. This great sporting event captures the nation and you can be with us on the finish line.

The Suerita will pick up from Festival Pier on the south bank out side the Royal Festival Hall and will then cruise up to Putney where the race begins and then follow the course up to Mortlake to the finish line where we will stay to watch the crew’s row through the line.

We will drop off at Kew Pier after the race around 5.30pm.

The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race

Oxford and Cambridge have been taking part in this annual race on the River Thames since 1829. It first started from two friends, Charles Merival who went Cambridge and Charles Wordsworth a student at Oxford, decided to hold a race between the universities. On 12th March 1829 is when the Oxford v Cambridge boat race history begins. The first planned route for the race was held on the river Thames from Westmister to Putney in 1836 but due to the overcrowding in the centre of the capital the universities found a new location between Putney and Mortlake in 1845. Within 11 years the race became an annual event as we know it today and has continued through to the 21st century apart from the two world wars. Cambridge is the most successful university and celebrated a 13th consecutive win in 1936. Oxford on the other hand won 10 in a row from 1976 and also racked up two nine race streaks in 1861 and 1890.
